Explorers Creek

Explorers' Creek opened in May 2009 and is our newest interactive exhibit. It features three fantastic areas – a water play area, a tropical birdhouse and a walk-through parrot feeding area.

Splash!

The first element of Explorers’ Creek is Splash! This water-play area, gives children a chance to paddle – whatever the weather. A long, winding stream of water runs throughout, so youngsters can build dams, change the flow of the stream and generally splash about, squirt water or play in the beached dinghy.

Forest of Birds

Next, you can follow in the footsteps of jungle explorers through the Forest of Birds. You’ll walk among exotic plants and see free-flying birds from Asia, Africa and South America, including bleeding heart doves and Victoria crowned pigeons. Visitors can also choose to brave the wobbly bridge over the creek.

Feed the lorikeets

Finally, you’ll have the opportunity to hand-feed nectar to a flock of around 30 parrots in the free-flight aviary at our Feed the Lorikeets exhibit. Rainbow lorikeets are small, arboreal parrots with brightly coloured plumage. They are found in south and east Indonesia, New Guinea, North East and Eastern Australia.

Lorikeets are naturally inquisitive, gregarious little birds and will happily fly down to perch on visitors and drink the nectar from small cups in their hands – it’s an absolutely unforgettable experience.

Feed the lorikeets is now open 11am - 4:30pm daily
