Asiatic Lions

Bristol Zoo is home to Kamal, a male Asiatic lion, who came to us in February 2008 from Twycross Zoo, Shiva our lioness who joined Kamal in July 2010 from Besançon Zoo in France, and their twin lion cubs, Jay and Kaly who were born on Christmas Eve 2010.

Asiatic Lions are critically endangered in the wild – with only about 300 remaining in the Gir Forest Sanctuary in Northern India. They were once widespread throughout Northern India and Pakistan, but hunting and habitat destruction has reduced their numbers drastically. Click here for more information on Asiatic lions.
